Need more options for refreshing drinks when the usual ones just don't cut it anymore? For those who have never tried it, boba, also known as bubble tea, is not just a drink, it's a snack! The tea and tapioca ball combo seems strange to some, but so many people have become obsessed with this delicious treat. Southern California is filled with boba lovers, so the business for these shops are booming. Long Beach has almost too many to choose from, which is why I narrowed it down to the top five! Read on to find out which local spots are my absolute favorite.
1. Tastea LBX
3860 Worsham Ave Unit 320 Long Beach, CA
It would be crazy to go without mentioning Tastea on this list. The menu contains an array of choices from "Specialteas" to "Simpliciteas." There is no skimping in the add-on section either, providing many different jelly, boba, and real fruit options to make the drink more fun. Don't be fooled by the green boba because some think this is a turnoff. However, the green has no effect on the flavor, it is simply a branding choice to match the logo. The honey boba is perfectly sweet and the texture is exactly right. Be sure to check this place out and maybe even order some of their popular "Karate Chicken" to go with it!
2. Cha For Tea
5720 E Seventh St Long Beach, CA
This Long Beach favorite doubles as a great study spot and social hangout for Cal State Long Beach students. It is one of the closest locations to campus, so it was definitely the most convenient back when school wasn't online. Even with a pandemic going on, it remains a go-to, despite the change in atmosphere. The Mango Green Tea and the Thai Milk Tea keep people coming back to feel a sense of comfort that we all need right now. Not only that, but they often offer discounts for LB students, so follow their Instagram to stay in the loop!
3. Loose Leaf Boba Co
315 The Promenade N Long Beach, CA
Not only is this place aesthetically pleasing, but it is also another great place for yummy boba. There are so many flavors at this establishment that you cannot find in many others. It is tucked in Downtown Long Beach with a cute garage-style storefront, ready for photos. The inviting, open space really adds to the boba drinking experience. This spot is great for those who appreciate no artificial flavors, non-dairy options, and authentic tasting tea. The family owned business continues to impress.
4. Boba Guys
6460 E Pacific Coast Hwy, Ste 120 Long Beach, CA
Boba Guys has been a popular spot in several other cities, but now there is finally a Long Beach location! Within the 2nd & PCH shopping center, this fairly new open area is great for outdoor seating. Quiet and peaceful on weekdays makes it great for studying students. They also provide easy ordering in advance via phone to keep it safe, easy, and efficient! The boba is chewy, the matcha is scrumptious, and the black sugar hojicha is Instagram-worthy. Check out their profile to see what I mean!
5. Hiccups
1946 N Lakewood Blvd, Long Beach, CA
Last but not least we have Hiccups! For fellow sweet tooth individuals, Hiccups is the spot for you. The menu is filled with refreshing options that will make your mouth water just reading the flavors. The choices almost cause sensory overload, but in the best way. It keeps people coming back to try more because there is no way to possibly try them all. Vietnamese coffee and Golden Milk Tea are classic choices for Hiccups go-ers. One of the perks, rare to Long Beach, is the amount of parking! It is not often you find a place with a stress-free parking lot and this tends to fit the bill.
